Homes in the Blue Ridge take a beating. Strong UV at elevation fades color, summer humidity feeds mildew, and freeze-thaw cycles open gaps in caulk and lift paint off trim. A paint job that might last ten years elsewhere can start peeling in five here if it isn't done right.
Timing matters. Most exterior paints need surface and air temperatures above about 50 degrees through the drying period, and they don't like heavy dew. In Western North Carolina, late spring and early fall usually give the most reliable painting weather.
Prep is most of the job. Loose paint is scraped, rough edges are sanded, mildew is washed off, gaps are caulked, and bare wood is primed before any finish coat goes on. Paint over a bad surface and it fails with the old coat underneath it.
Use a quality exterior acrylic with good UV resistance, and plan on two finish coats on siding and trim that see direct sun.
